Psychology Service at Obra do Berço

Obra do Berço admits children in early childhood, from zero to three years of age.
Several research studies and legal documents point out that a careful and sensitive look during this development phase is fundamental for protecting, guaranteeing children's rights, and their integral development.

According to neuroscience, the early years of a child's life is the period of greatest brain plasticity and opportunity for learning and developing skills.

Therefore, We believe that a child’s early years may echo throughout his/her life in the construction of their subjectivity, social and emotional skills and wellbeing, thus protecting the child’s development. The Psychology Service at Obra do Berço focuses on the following main objectives:

  • Pay close attention to the specificity and developmental milestones of early childhood, monitoring the children, and facilitating their skills and comprehensive development.
  • Welcome the child and his/her family concerning their uniqueness and rights since the arrival at the shelter.
  • Child’s participation
  • Prepare the Plano Individual de Atendimento (PIA - Individual Care Plan), a planning tool based on a thorough study of each case. It will guide the actions needed to enable full protection, family and community reinsertion, and building of autonomy of children removed from parental care, under protective measures, and taken to shelters.
  • Check the evolution of the child’s psychosocial monitoring as well as his/her family’s at Obra do Berço.
  • Diagnose and prognose family ties.
  • Conduct anamnesis interviews, as well as provide documents such as reports, medical records, PIAs and evolution sheets.
  • Supervise the child's health and how its monitoring, together with the technical team, checking the child's vaccination booklet and other significant documents.
  • Monitor the child's performance at school by observing the school environment and analysing case studies with professionals who work with the child.
  • Frequent training of staff.
  • Carry out case studies with the team, prioritising the exchange of experiences among the various staff members, exchange observations, and issues related to the children and their families.
  • Organise spaces, time, and routines together with the team.
  • Liaise the institution's technical team with the network of services, protection, and rights assurance.
  • Document the child's sheltering process at Obra do Berço.
